Happy New Year Thailand! Farang New Year That Is…

Happy New Year! Sawadee Pee Mai!  I saw the New Year in at a friend’s house with Mrs TTL. It was a small party of about 12 people. There was food, drink, music, dancing and party poppers to fire at each other dangerously when the clock struck 12. We left the Twiglets, pizza slices and champagne at around 2.30am, while the party apparently continued until 6am. Branded lightweights as we left, we were both eager to find our beds having endured a number of recent late nights over Christmas. I only had a couple of drinks because I was driving, which suited me because I am not a fan of starting the new year feeling like crap, preferring instead to make the first day one of getting things done (as I mean to go on). As it happens, even though I didn’t drink much, I still felt like I’d been on a “Bangkok bender”, a phrase coined by a Swiss friend of mine. Nevertheless, I did get my end of month accounts done today and managed to pen this post!
It has been a wonderful Christmas spent with family; lots of lovely country walks, lunches out, Nintendo Wii playing, shopping, debating and eating far too much – that’s the problem with Christmas, you end up getting used to treats every day; chocolates, crisps, puddings, liqueurs, cheesy footballs, etc. However, despite a fabulous time, as I drove home last night, I felt for the first time since I got back, the urge to be in Thailand. This feeling was heightened when I woke up to find The Bridge On The River Kwai airing on television – the few Thai words mumbled here and there by English actors to Thai extras got me excited, much to Mrs TTLs amusement.
Friends and associates have been remarking that they can see “us” back here before long having a family, as if it would be impossible to be happy and doing that successfully in Thailand, or that it simply isn’t a wise option; I get the vibe that people believe Thailand is a place reserved for packbackers and sex tourists, not a young couple in their 30s. Of course, those who live there know differently…I think. Anyway, my only reply on that subject right now is that it isn’t currently a consideration, and although Mrs TTL says she would like to live here, an action packed Christmas holiday is a far cry from real UK life, which is hard for her to imagine with the limited perspective she currently has.
One plus of living abroad is that I actually end up appreciating loved ones a whole lot more when my time is limited to just a couple of months in the UK. It shouldn’t be that way but it is,  I find myself engrossed in people’s company and more accepting of things that might grate on me on a full time basis. So for now this is the perfect scenario, and soon it will be back to The Thailand Life again.
So what’s in store for 2012? Well, I have no real fixed New Year’s resolutions, except perhaps to work harder and improve my body flexibility (but I said that last year :) ). Hobby wise I am thinking about getting a metal detector. It’s something I have thought about since the start of 2011. I always wanted one as a kid, so why not treat myself to a new adventure in 2012 and find some treasure. I also plan to enjoy Thailand more; to see more sights, to learn to speak more Thai and to appreciate the privilege of being able to live a Thailand life, all of which I will of course be sharing here with you guys.
Roll on Songkran…
Anyone got any New Year’s resolutions they’d like to share?
